A funeral, a robbery and an update on the next date

My best (girl)friend's mom had been very sick for quite some time and passed away last Wednesday. Needless to say, my friend's world fell apart. I went to see her as often as I could as we live about an hour and a half from each other, all the while wishing I could do more than her laundry, attempt at cooking a decent, edible meal and supply tissues ever so often.

The funeral was on Monday and we arrived at the church about an hour early. Monique wanted to be alone for a while to say her last goodbyes and we (Chris went with me) drove around for a bit. The service was suppose to start at 11:00 when the preacher came in and told us to please be patient as there had been an incident at the family's house and the service would commence as soon as they arrived.

The 'incident' he referred to was a robbery at Monique's dad's house. Only Monique and her father stayed behind at the church when the rest of the family went home to grab a few things and to get the rest of the people who were still at the house. They were held at gun point while four robbers took all the purses, jewelry and car keys. My friend's cousin said angrily to the one masked man:

"We're on our way to my aunt's funeral. Can't you just let us go so we can pay our respects!"

to which he replied:

"I'd be more worried about my own funeral if I were you."

How's that for shutting up an angry woman.

I asked my friend how she was doing and she replied:

"I'm alright, thanks. Everyone that comes up to me sharing their condolences do so by slipping a Prozac in my hand."

I could think of worse things to get at a funeral. Like sinus from all the flowers.

She was just sad that a day which was meant for the final farewell of a loved one was now tainted by the stain of an (unnecessary) crime. There weren't many family after the service because they all ran around giving statements to the police and worrying about their valuables.

We just keep our heads down day to day, clutching our handbags and pray for the best.

Oh! And as for the ten men in ten weeks-order from my mother: I have to go on the next one tonight. She said it'd be a good thing to get my mind of depressing issues in our country and in our hearts. Hopefully the date is a comedian.

Oh my gosh, what an awful chain of events!! The dark hearts of people never fail to amaze me...

Thinking of your friend and her family in these tough times. <3

So sorry to hear about your friend's Mom's passing and the robbery incident was so tragic. I'm grateful that no one was hurt because it sounds like the robbers were some crazies. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

Can't wait to hear about the date.

What a horrible thing to go through. Prozac helps, sure, but I'm glad your friend has you to help her cope.

Ditto The PT on the date.

Thats awful honey; such slimeballs to take advantage of people when they're at their lowest.

Cant wait to hear about tonight's date. Tis good to see you back and posting; have been missing your words of wit and wisdom, my dear.

I can't believe some people would be so low to rob a funeral party. It's a good thing I don't make all the laws or I'd find those people and bury them, alive.

Sorry to hear about your friends mom. Losing my own mother just 8 weeks ago, I know what she is feeling...or close to it. I've heard of people targeting the bereaved families with scams and such, but that's the first I've heard of a robbery. What a horrible experience. Thankfully you were driving around and not at the families home!

Good luck on completing your dating task! A little levity would probably do good!
:-)

It does pretty pretty ghastly. I hope your friend is okay and, of course, I hope your date goes well.

Sorry to your friend. I hope she makes it through both ordeals unscathed and without a Prozac addiction.
Can you be addicted to Prozac? hm.

Good luck on your date tonight. It would be GREAT if he is a comedian...Funny guys are almost as great as super duper hot guys. But not quite. ;)

What an horrific thing to happen. I am lost for words.
Good luck on your date. I have trouble meeting enough suitable men, what is your secret?

When it rains, it pours. I hope your next date is with Pieter Dirk Uys, who must be the funniest man in Africa apart from Mugabe. I think he's gay, but a woman like you could turn him.

LadyTruth, I have to say sorry for being so MIA lately! And I feel so very bad for your friend. As someone who is dealing with a mother who is sick, I can understand how she feels. And if it is any consolation to you ,it is immeasurable the friendship (even if it is as simple doing laundry and cooking a meal) you provide for her. I know that my friends never think they do enough, but they do. They are there and that in the end is all that counts.

Good luck on your date! Let us know how it goes... I've missed all of my blogging friends- and you dear lady are no exception! I adore your prose!

BASTARDS. That's so completely low I can't even describe. Your poor friend. She will be so grateful for your support; I'd be overwhelmed to have someone do my laundry and put a hot meal in from of me. That's love.

Wow-I hope the catch the asshats that robbed your friend's family. Seriously low.

Man, there really IS nothing sacred anymore. That's a terrible story. Hope your date is better.

That's horrible. I'm sorry you and your family and friends had to go through all of that. Good luck and I'll be thinking of all of you...

You're making my heart hurt-- it's so much to endure... I only hope no one says "everything happens for a reason", or my second-favorite aphorism, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Both statements are absurd, but people say them at the worst possible times.

I hope the date is just wonderful.

What a shitty few days. Hope your date brings a smile to your face at least.
All the best.

Crap all round.Hope the date goes well. Looking forward to hearing about it.

That's awful. Sorry to hear that. And I just hope your next date is a good guy with a sense of humor...(comedians try too hard to make you laugh, which isn't funny especially in bed).

That's about the shittiest thing I've heard in a while. Karma is going to get those robbing f'ers.

Organic M: but she's a survivor, she's gonna make it and that's about all the lyrics to the song I know :)

Sami: dark hearts? I'm thinking more along the lines of no hearts, what do you say?

Peach Tart: if the rest of the family could only see past the fact that some of their earthly possesions have been stolen, I'm sure they'd feel the same way. Lives = more precious than jewelry, right?

OWO: it wouldn't be a tragedy if there wasn't any Prozac involved, I guess ;)

Judearoo: it feels like I've been on a holiday for a while except for the no sun-sea-beach-tan-relax part!

Eric: a man to my heart :)

f8hasit: I'm sorry to hear about your mother; it could not have been easy for you. I know my friend is not taking it very well, but hey, there's a special bond between a mother and daughter that no other relationship can come close to.

Matthew: good thing I didn't paint a picture of blood and gore or I'd be giving tourism a complete knock for next year ;)

erin: I agree. Hot guys are on the top of the food chain!

Proud Maisie: my secret? My mother, I guess ;) You can borrow her expertise for a while if you'd like

GB: ol' Evita Perron? I think that ship has docked a different harbor all together unfortunately.

Lola: you have been missed! All the best to you, dear lady, with your mother being unwell. It can't be easy for you right now. And thank you for those kind words :)

omchelsea: she has always been there for me, wiping the tears away, cracking a joke about my dysfunctional relationships when I felt like hiding under the covers for the next forty years. It's good to have friends like that.

Rebecca: they probably won't ever get caught as things are at this moment, but we can still be hopeful, right?

Tennyson: sacred stopped happening when Judas made a deal with the devil back in the day, I think. Maybe a little bit of the devil was hiding in these men's skins that day, who knows?

Mega: thank you for your sincere thoughts :)

Leah: I'm so glad someone else feels the way I do about those terrible substitutes of meaningful phrases. I didn't hear anyone utter those condemned words or else I would've kicked them in the head (I've been practicing).

rubbish: we've decided to flush the toilet, spray some air freshner and move on :)

Madame D: I guess it just makes you think a little less about your own silly problems when things like these happen to friends.

Jeve: after reading your comment, all I can imagine now is Adam Sandler tickling me in bed until I wet us both and kick him out. Hehehe ... !

OSG: I wish we could decide what kind of karma would be cast upon them ... hmmm ...
